Good Music on TV

I think it's safe to say that whether we want to admit it or not, we all love TV for one reason or another. These days, especially now that the Sopranos is over, I don't really watch much other than Mets games, which is still usually about a 3-hour sit down every day. But in the past, I've had my various TV show addictions, so I can definitely relate to people who go around singing the theme song to one of their favorite shows. There's actually almost nothing more irritating than getting one of those songs stuck in your head for days on end. So in an attempt to try to irritate all of you by putting some TV show theme songs in your heads, here is what I consider to be the top 10 best TV show theme songs of all time (1 is the best):

1. Sopranos
2. Wonder Years
3. Cheers
4. Mash
5. Greatest American Hero
6. My Two Dads
7. Fresh Prince of Bel-air
8. Monkees
9. Friends
10. Ducktales

Also receiving votes: L.A. Law, Boston Legal, Mission Impossible, Family Ties, and Happy Days.

Congratulations on your first post. Way to grab a glove and get in the game.

I have to pick apart your list a bit. I can't agree with The Wonder Years, because they used a Beatles song - that's cheating. My Two Dads - I don't even remember it? Friends should be completely deleted from our cultural consciousness - the show sucked and can't be rewatched. Finally, Boston Legal, LA Law and Mission Impossible should have their own category b/c they're instrumental and can't really be compared to jingles. If instrumentals are in the running, Dougie Howser, MD and Seinfeld are up there. I commend your courageous Ducktales choice. Love it.

Here are my additions to the list - in no particular order:
Growing Pains (good theme, mediocre show)
Silver Spoons
3's Company
The Golden Girls
Gilligan's Island
The Brady Bunch (such a catchy jingle, even though the song stinks)

It was actually the Joe Cocker version of the song, which is much better than the Beatles version. But I see your point. I also see your point about the instrumentals. If they should have their own category, then Mash would have to be in there as well.

Good call with Gilligan's Island - I forgot about that one.

This is an excellent, important topic. Well worthy of a first post. Welcome, BSD.

Thoughts: I agree that the Wonder Years is difficult to judge, based on the fact that it is an independently popular song. I believe its the only such song mentioned so far. But at the same time, it did a good job of capturing the essence of the show. Tough call.

My Two Dads?? No idea.

I don't really see the distinction between instrumentals and those with lyrics. Though Dave Law made a good call with Doogie Howser's dorky little tune. I loved that.

Cheers is great. Ditto for Mash. Greatest American Hero may be #1 on my list. Fresh Prince I find a bit overrated.

Friends has to be on the list. And please, Dave Law. Stop with the grandstanding. You know you cried when Chandler first said that he loved Monica.

I think Gilligan's Island and Brady Bunch are almost surely near the top ten.

A couple that haven't been mentioned (admittedly with some Google cheating). Its amazing how many theme songs I know from shows that I have never ever seen:

Night Court. Funky base line start. Nice use of wood block. Oustanding. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WRCggZ3GQU

The A Team. Helicopters, voice-overs, gunshots, and great strings. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTICZxzKE6I&mode=related&search=

The Love Boat. Love - exciting and new... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_wFEB4Oxlo

Laverne and Shirley. Doin' it our way. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mVKUpT4g5k

Miami Vice. Possibly Jan Hammer's greatest moment. I always enjoyed seeing the jai alai player... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGkurWAXgZs

Dukes of Hazzard. I seriously love this song, and it has nothing at all to do with Daisy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRX4mlFi06A

Addams Family. Creepy, cooky, altogether spooky. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xL_9zdu4iVw

The Jeffersons. Movin on up. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7GX9Bp1_No

Hill Street Blues. Classic piano tune - I've never watched a minute of this show, but I remember hearing the theme when my folks watched. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jk43JwMxxNc

And finally, here's one that sticks in my head. It makes Ducktales look like Dirty Harry.

Muppet Babies. I admit it. I watched. I just closed my eyes and made believe, and I could be anywhere. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ju75XsCO4o

Its actually somewhat comforting that the youtube video has gotten over 2,300 favorites. Yeah, no. Not really.

Regardless of my emotional response when Chandler and Monica finally got together - Friends is not a good show. I can't sit through a single episode nowadays. I'd rather watch Everybody Loves Raymond.

My rationale for separating the instrumentals from the jingles was based on BSD's intro. I think jingles that you can sing tend to get stuck in your head more frequently than instrumentals. Now come-on Spike-heads, "show me that smile again..."
